Salford City College has been offering Higher Education courses for over a decade. The College offers foundation degrees awarded by the University of Salford at the Pendleton Centre and our brand new FutureSkills campus close to Media City. Why study with Salford City College? You can choose how long you want to study for- the College offers intermediate HE awards such as foundation degrees and HNCs. These courses are perfect for those who aren’t sure whether they want to commit to full three or four year degree programmes. Once you have completed your foundation degree or HNC you can opt to top up your qualification (e.g. to a full honours degree) or walk away with a recognised and respected intermediate HE qualification. Flexible modes of study- courses can be studied in full or part time modes to fit around your lifestyle and commitments.

Student life

Student life The College offers franchised foundation degrees awarded by the University of Salford. Students are able to access facilities and services at both the College campuses and also at our partner universities campuses. This gives you the opportunity to combine the benefits of studying in a college environment such as small class sizes, regular access to your tutors and affordable tuition fees with academic and social benefits of accessing the facilities at a large University. University of Salford programmes are delivered at two of the Colleges centres, both centres are a short distance from University of Salford Campuses. Art and Design programmes are delivered at the Pendleton Centre which has excellent facilities for Art and Design including its own in house Graphic Design Agency. Creative Music, Games Design and Media Production are delivered at our brand new MediaCity based campus, FutureSkills. The Centre has been designed specifically for delivery of these programmes. Students at Salford City College have access to a wide range of student services such as pastoral support, counselling, financial advice and a wide range of learning resources. The University is located in two main areas of the city: at Salford Crescent, a short distance from Manchester City Centre and at MediaCity. Both University campuses are easily accessible from all college campuses by public transport. Our new FutureSkills centre, is a few minutes walk from the University MediaCity campus, a brand new state of the art facility in the heart of media city. Students studying on University of Salford courses can access services through the University. Access to the main campus- e.g. study areas and social facilities, University library facilities and online study materials,Student Union facilities- e.g. bar, student activity groups, some Student life services (e.g. careers advice services),Accommodation in University Halls


The College operates a number of societies including an active Sports Academy, Media Society, Music Society and Art and Design Society. Students also have access to the University of Salford Student Union

Why study this course

You will study games design and explore the professional skills necessary to pursue employment in the Games industry. You will study in MediaCity and engage in work based experience relevant to your programme of study.

Who’s this course for?

The qualification is aimed at those who wish to pursue freelance work or employment in a range of careers in the games design industry. Foundation degrees are a good stepping stone for students who wish to pursue BA (Hons) Degree qualifications. On completion of the foundation degree students can apply for direct entry into year 3 (or if studied part-time, level 6) of a computing and games design (or related) degree or a BA top up programme.

Modular structure

Year 1- 6 modules are studied at level 4: • Design Fundamentals • Visual Arts for Games Design • Creative Media Analysis • Digital Graphics & 2D Animation • Programming for Games Design • Sound, Music and Entertainment Technologies for Games Design Year 2- 6 modules are studied at level 5 • Games Design Planning • Production Management for Games Design • Work Based Placement • Games Design Prototyping • Digital Narrative Technologies • Engine Programming for Games Design or Digital Character Art and Environments

Equipment needed

You should provide your own drawing equipment, you may wish to purchase your own PC/MAC.

Skills and experience gained

The programme offers the opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in games design and development.

After the course

On completion, students may pursue a career in Games Design or complete a BA top up/apply for level 6 entry onto a cognate degree in Games Design such as the level 6 Computing and Games Design programme offered by the University of Salford.
